Renovation | Gatehouse "Gleis 3Viertel", Göschwitz

A place for communication

In the past, this gatehouse was a place of communication – people would pass by this gate on their way to work, greet each other and do the same during their lunch break and after work. Today, after its renovation in line with conservation guidelines, the building not only shines in its former glory, but also serves a similar communicative purpose as it did in its origins. Converted into a café, the gatehouse is now used as a snack bar for the surrounding companies.

Relic from the cement industry

The site of today's ‘Jena 21’ industrial estate in Göschwitz was once home to a cement factory: the ‘Sächsisch-Thüringische Portland-Zement-Fabrik Prüssing’ was founded in 1885 by engineer Godhard Prüssing and had become one of Germany's largest cement companies by the end of the Second World War. Dissolved in 1967, all that remained of the company was the listed Prüssing Villa and the gatehouse. Both buildings were recently renovated, with the latter becoming an impressive example of the possibilities offered by and with exposed concrete blocks.

Renovation with sensitivity

The façade plaster, which had been painted over several times, was milled off, the existing structure was cleaned and the plaster system was adapted to the existing structure. Defects were repaired using maxit ip 18 ML lime-cement lightweight plaster. A binding agent was not necessary in these areas, as cement was used as a binding agent when the gatehouse was built. The quarter-round window and door frames were also restored in the process.

The thin-layer and levelling plaster maxit multi 270 was used as finishing plaster – applied in a thickness of 6 mm with a smooth rubbed surface. After the required curing time, the surfaces were painted with a silicate paint.

The exposed aggregate concrete blocks were painstakingly restored. The surfaces of the blocks on the west façade that could not be restored were covered with a thin layer of mineral filler – maxit multi 290 – coloured in an ochre tone.
