Ecological construction has been a strong trend for some years. Many home builders and modernisers would like to fulfil their sustained awareness and simultaneously retain the value of their property and secure it long-term. And that is with a nice side-effect that the interior climate improves and thereby the living quality is increased. Our products of the maxit pluscalc line provide the opportunity to have this.

Similar to lime, maxit pluscalc also has the extraordinary property to absorb water vapour and to supply it with a delay back to the room air in order to sustainably optimise the cyclical humidity regulation of the interior climate.

Studies have shown that the human organism is in its absolute comfort zone when the temperature is just above 20 °C and there is a relative humidity of 50 percent. When the humid interior air comes into contact with the wall, it is absorbed by the maxit pluscalc where it is stored in optimal humidity conditions for the interior air and it is then supplied back into the interior air in doses, when required. The maxit pluscalc is then ready for further absorption of humidity.

The aim is always to stabilise the relative air humidity to a level of 50 percent. Tests with various parameters concerning room size, temperature and air humidity have shown that maxit pluscalc alone can absorb between 10 and 15 times more humidity, namely approx. 90 g/m², than the surrounding interior air. Conventionally unconventional

Providing an excellent level of insulation completely toxin free and with a low primary energy requirement – something that hardly seemed possible until now. The 100 per cent organic maxit straw insulating panels for ETIC systems now offer you a particularly ecological option. As an agricultural by-product, straw is a resource that is readily available and whose insulating capacity has been valued for centuries. What is unique about maxit straw insulating panels is that not only is a plastic-based binder unnecessary, no chemical additives are required either.

Insulate and protect the environment 

For anyone insulating the façade of his house, it is usually not just a question of saving heating costs: environmental protection also plays an increasingly important role. This trend has led to constant research into insulating materials that are as ecological as possible. maxit now offers a traditional building material in a new form: straw.

At present, straw is used primarily in the livestock sector. However, this does not exhaust its greatest potential – its exceptional insulating capacity. Exploitation of this potential is now being revived with the newly developed maxit straw insulating panels. To enable insulation on a purely natural basis, however, not only did the customary basic materials have to be rejected but the binder used for the panels also had to be reviewed. Up to now, artificially produced binders, such as PU adhesives have been used in the manufacture of conventional insulating panels. And these have come under fire by experts because they contain harmful substances. Now, a completely organic protein-based binder is used to produce maxit straw insulating panels. This makes the straw insulating panels not only completely compostable, but also absolutely toxin free, posing no risk to health.

Grown first, then mounted

The thermal insulating properties of threshed stalks and plant fibres have been valued for hundreds of years. But how can straw be put on walls without – as is often the case – the use of artificial binders? The protein binder used in maxit straw insulating panels is not only completely organic, but also powerful. During production, straw and the newly developed and patented binder are pressed into shape and dried by applying heat. From the moment the straw is threshed through to the finished insulating panel, just a fraction of the energy required by other natural insulating materials is needed.

New insulating material, straightforward application

Marriage of glass and mortar

Supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF, Berlin), maxit developed a completely new building material technology with the ecosphere insulation system. maxit initially converted this into interior wall and façade insulation based on mortar under the names "maxit eco 71" and "maxit eco 72". Hollow glass microspheres function here as lightweight aggregates and ensure top values in terms of thermal insulation, weight reduction and long-term stability.

The special feature: The mineral material can be sprayed from a silo and is therefore not only freely formable, but also completely jointless and easy to process.

Light, stable & ecological – using nature as an example to conserve resources

In recent years, the society has become even more aware of the issue of ecology. Mineral building materials such as ecosphere are also in high demand for façade and interior insulation. As the result of many years of research, a building material technology has now been developed that meets modern requirements. maxit ecosphere is based on the example of nature, which avoids any form of overdimensioning. This can be seen, for example, in the construction of human bones consisting of ideal, multicellular pore structures. Optimum technical parameters, coupled with the conservation of resources, were the credo in the development of insulating materials. The secret of ecosphere are tiny vacuum hollow glass spheres, so-called glass bubbles, which are used instead of building sand or other lightweight materials. This is an important advantage from the point of view of the increasing scarcity of resources. The productivity of ecosphere also speaks for itself: one tonne of dry mortar produces around 8,000 litres of sprayed insulation on the building site.

Thermal insulation plus heat accumulator

maxit ecosphere scores with excellent insulating properties and a thermal conductivity of λ10, dry, mat < 0.040 W/(mK) in dry condition. These are achieved by the microscopically small hollow glass spheres, which delay the heat transfer thanks to vacuum confinement. As a result, the outer wall cools down more slowly and dries accordingly faster: ecosphere ensures in a purely physical way that algae and mould hardly have a chance on the façade.

For inside and outside

ecosphere can also make full use of its climate-regulating advantages in the interior insulation of facades: In contrast to panel solutions, the sprayability ensures seamless processing and eliminates the risk of cavities. This prevents waterlogging and mildew formation, keeping the air in the interior permanently healthy.

Insulation in a single operation – without assembly errors

The new ecosphere sprayed insulation is applied – up to a thickness of 100 millimetres without plaster base – classically with the plastering machine and from the silo. Thanks to the sprayability, segregation and assembly errors, which can occur with panel systems, are virtually eliminated. Delivered in the silo, dust pollution on the construction site is also reduced and work steps are saved.
